Where is the best place to take the driving test in IL?
I got a great deal on a 2000 fatboy softail (my first bike) last year and put about 2k on it so far. Everyone keeps tellling me it is to big to pass the driving test and I have beenn able to get into the safety class so far.
I went to renew my permit at the DMV in Joliet, Il. and checked out the course. The instructor said I need a smaller bike. He also said they have a new course coming in and nobody is passing it yet.
Last time I was trying to get in the safety course as a walkin I overheard somebody say their friend went somewhere and past the test with ease. All they had to do was show they could ride a bit and hold the bike up. No sholums or u-turns were involved, but they were not sure where. Does anybody have any idea's?

try taking MSF course that provides bike, they test you on their bike and then give you cert to take to MVC.
Also, some states allow you to take your test on a scooter, you can rent one and a child can pass the test on it.

You can check out some of the dealers that rent bikes by the day. Wildfire on North Avenue and Rt 83 isn't too far from you (if you want to rent a Harley sportster or Buell) or google motorcycle rentals and rent a smaller Honda or something to take the test. If you look at some local Harley Dealers that offer a "Learn to Ride" course some of them will give you everything you need to take the test.

in NC the only way to get around the DMV test is to take the MSC and then go to the DMV with yer diploma and take the written test.....i took the whole thing at the DMV 24 yrs ago on a bagger and passed the first time......had to do the serpentine, slow ride{timed} and the stop/start without putting yer feet to the ground.......you touch the ground anytime during the test and you fail.........they don't care what you test on, as long as its street legal

Ya'll might do better up in Yankeedom. But I know that the typical DMV testor down here dosnt have a clue about MC's, most likely never been on one. They just got a little checklist you gota complete and they most likely couldnt find first gear if they was on it. So ifn thats your case take any advice on what kinda bike you need from them with a large heapin dose of salt.

thanks for the advice. There is another MSC in early October I hope to get in, then I won't have to worry about it. Either way I'm getting my license before next season and expect to get in some real time on 2 wheels

Ya with the MSC you bypass the test, I live in Chicago proper and the best way round here is to take the MSF course and then take the test in the parking lot by the united center with their bikes and the DMV guy comes to the site really easy. I'm pretty sure the test is standard across IL no matter what DMV you go too, aka, 90 degree turn, U-turn, swerving around some cones, quick stop, pretty basic all with in a pretty small rectangle. never rode a fatboy but if you already got 2k on it and can maneuver that in some tight turns and what have you you should be fine. Some DMV testers are very very lenient (saw a guy drop his bike and still passed) and some are very strict, just hope you luck out!
