Thumbs down tranny shifter arm

Have 98 ultra classic that the splines oon the shifter lever are worn out. I know that the inner and outer primay has to be pulled but can it be done with out a special to for the cluth basket, if so how difficult is it to do, and is it worth $300 at the dealer to replace a $21 part

If you are carefull you can re cut the splines with a hack saw blade or a small triangle file

You don't need any special tool to remove the clutch basket. You're not taking the steel/fiber plates out. Just take the pushrod adjuster out, and then the large retaining nut. (reversed thread) Wa-la.... With the compensating sprocket and adjuster undone, the whole primary drive assembly comes off in one shot.

Recutting the splines is a waste of your time, because the old ones are woen DOWN, and the outside diameter has changed. Cutting new splines will make it look nice, but the shifter arm will not close tight enough to grip the "new" splines that you cut.
