08 Heritage gas leak

Hi all,

My heritage has started leaking gas out the small wire tunnel under the gas gage on the tank. Its a small leak and only seems to drip while the engine is running. Is this an easy fix or does the tank have to come off. I figure the wires are somehow attached to the gage but I'll admit, I'm clueless. I'm sure the stealer will take weeks to get around to fixing this so I'm hoping to do it myself. There aint many ridin days left this year up here in Vermont. This sorta freeks me out as it drips right on the spark plug and I really don't want burst into flames. (At least until I get to that place down below that I'm sure has a reservation in my name......)

Thanks for any advice you all have.
Steve

You can unplug the gauge connect under the lower left bottom of the tank and pull the gauge up out of the tank far enough to see where it's leaking from . That wire tube is welded into the tank so if it's leaking then it's probably a bad weld or cracked seam . Take it to the dealer for a QUICK check , tell them you're not leaving the bike . They probably won't be able to fix it and will most likely have to order a new tank out of the painted parts catalog so you'd have to wait for the tank anyways .
Be carefull about that gas leaking onto your hot engine too ...

New tank on the way!!

Thanks man,

You hit it right on the head. Just got back from the dealer and sure enough, Its leaking right at the weld at the top of the wire tunnel. He said "Its harleys problem so what color tank do you want?" Well black of course. I like my black bikes. We figured as long as I don't fill it to more than 3/4 tank, I should be fine until the new tank shows up. So far my dealer and the service guys have done me right. They are awesome. If any of you ever pass through Barre, Vermont, Stop in and say HI!!! They will likely feed you a snack and a soda. Check em out, They are Wilkins Harley-davidson, Rt. 14 Barre Vermont. The owner is Barbara Wilkins, She is 80 and still rides and she is the nicest woman you'll ever meet. Been in the business since 1947.

Thanks again,
Steve
