A few things:

1.) Petcock vacuum source. If the vacuum source is compensated, the petcock doesn't open all the way, and the engine will starve for fuel at speed. The includes the petcock vacuum line, and the internal diaphram itself in the petcock. I believe 1998 was pre-Ethanol rubber.......... they can deteriorate with age. Ethanol can speed that up.

2.) Clogged crossover line. (if applicable) Is the left side of the tank running out, and not being resotored fast enough by the right side of the tank? Have you looked in the tank when it shut down, or does it happen at 1/2 full or less, and not at full?

3.) Clogged or partially blocked internal petcock filter.

4.) Crimped or compensated fuel line. Again.....pre-Ethanol.

5.) Fuel tank not venting enough, including blocked vent line, incorrect or faulty vent on cap. (You can suck on the vent in the cap and it'll "pop" and open. You can't blow through it.)

See if that helps.

2 questions ,

1.) im going to eliminate the vos with a regular petcock & plug the vaccume linefrom J&P or some where local , is that ok to elminate the vos?

2.) what trans & primary lube do you reccomend & what weight ?
You don't NEED a new in-tank filter. Just take the old one out and clean it.... If it's torn or broken, then replace it.

1.) No. Do NOT eliminate the VOES (Vacuum Operated Electronic Sensor) as it controls the ignition timing, measured by engine vacuum.

You might be *thinking* about eliminating the vacuum source for the petcock and sticking a regular petcock on there....?????? (Petcock and VOES are two separate things.)

That can be done. JPCycle sells them in chrome for $17. Just plug the line, or cap it off. Just remember to shut your fuel off every time you stop now......

2.) Trans: I recommend a 75w140 Synthetic gear lube.

Primary: a 20w50 oil in the primary. Just not "car" oil, as it'll make the clutch slip.

I don't think you need to dis the voes just changing petcocks . You can dis the petcock vacuum and still keep the voes plugged into the carb vacuum fitting . The voes adjusts the timing under load and no load conditions .
I use HD Formula Plus in both trans and primary but you can also use Ford atf in the primary as it gives smoother clutch action . 1 qt. primary and 24 oz. trans .

Oops ... didn't see Dave posted already !

Glad to hear your problem is resolved. Taking your own advise is probably the hardest thing to do, isn't it?
