Talking Chick needs carb help

Just so you all don't think you're dealin with a guy thats a complete idiot. I'm a girl workin on my own bike. I have a 1985 lowrider w/ a 388 SS carb. Can you give me a few reasons why it's popping and backfiring, more so when I have choke on. It is firing and almost starts. Every 3rd or 4th try it catches fire and remains in the air cleaner cover for several seconds. I've leaned it out as much as poss. Carb was rebuilt less than a year ago and was running great.

Need more info. Did this just start happening? If so, what, if anything, happened directly before this? Could be a gummed up bowl, timing issue, many other things.

Sorry, been out of range a few days.

Bike has sat longer than I've ever let it sit before (4 mos). I did drain the fuel and clean the carb before trying to start it. And yes to you DARIEN1965, gas does dribble out of carb after cranking 2 or 3 times. (which, I assume, is why it's catching fire) The carb was rebuilt less than a year ago and I cleaned it the other day. If the float is sticking, should I just rebuild it again? Thanks for responding. I WANNA RIDE!!

Sounds like trash in fuel line holding float open.

I would recommend checking the Fuel filter and also clean the carb jets and stuff again. As it has been said here before, it does sound as if something is sticking. More power to you as a Chick working on her own ride. Go for it atleast you are having a go. I know heaps of males over here in Oz that would never work on there own bikes.

4months is long enough for gas to turn to varnish and gum up your carb take it apart clean it clean the tank and change the fuel filter always treat your gas for storage even if you drain the carb.

BTW what did you clean it with?, was it discolored inside?, did you try it without the choke??? Without starting it leave the gas on for awhile and see if gas still comes out the carb.
