Sudden engine shut down
Just bought a 1992 Heritage Softail. Its been running great, and then suddenly it crapped out and shut down on the side of the highway. After towing the bike home i have tried to determine the problem with no success. I removed the air cleaner and when the bike is running it seems to be spitting out fuel from the carburetor, before sputtering, backfiring, and shutting down.
After reading the shop manual i realized i have been using the enrichener valve wrong, and letting it run for up to 10 minutes before riding it. Could this cause a sudden engine shutdown?
What could cause an evolution engine to shut down without any apparent previous signs of problems?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Donald

Enricher valve for ten minutes? till the jugs are warm lota old timers do that. Not likely to cause it to shut down though.
first thing that pops to my head is the crank position sensor ifn it has one or a timing flaw of some kind.

1992 didn't have a CPS, but I get the idea, it was something along the "timing" lines as well.
Does it have spark?
Does it have compression?
It almost sounds like a broken rocker or collapsed push rod.........

I've never seen it on a Harely, like with a car, and since most bikes fire twice, it's not that much of an issue. I have the original set of wired off my 95 and they're still good. As long as they don't get damaged or rubbed through....

Does it restart after it cools down?
Could be the coil.
