s&s shorty e
Well first and foremost i like to introduce myself to the forum. Im from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and i recently picked up a 1977 Harley Davidson Sportster to work on for somebody. This bike is really really clean, new paint, new chrome, rigid frame, etc. Well it has a shorty e s&s carb on it. The bike sat with gas in it for a year and it gummed up the carb. Well i cleaned the carb 4 times now taking out every needle etc, replacing the accelerator pump rebuild and everything and everytime i install the carb back on the bike, it either back fires thru the exhaust with a flame and it only runs on choke for a small second or two. Each plug gets a clean blue spark. One thing i noticed however is the front pipe gets warm the the rear pipe stays cold. I can provide more info on this bike if needed.
thanks!
alex

You got a good intake seal and check your pipes make sure nothing crawled up them seeing it sat for a year.

Nothing crawled up the pipes because they are new to my understanding but ill check for sure. The intake seal however shows a bit of the carb when its in the right side of the heads when its in the rubber insulator. Perhaps its not tight enough.. Any other suggestions i can try before i go out there?
thanks for your suggestions to brutus.

Yep the rear is not firing ,you say it has spark,What color are the plugs,Might be fouled from trying to start and make sure you have a charged battery..Intkae leak is a big deal I would check that and the plugs then try to fire it up.If you cranked the air mixture screw down to tight on those carbs it puts a hole in the carb body and ruins it.Just a word of caution.

What im going to do is what you said and set the s&s to the factory settings and work from there. The plug however has a bright blue spark like the front plug does so can i assume its in good working shape?

I set the carb to the s&s factory settings and now it runs until you give it gas... What should i do now? I will honestly mail a person a 5.00 check to get a beer to the person that helps me get this running because quit honest, ive been losing sleep over this bike for 2 weeks now!!!

Close off the accelerator pump when you get it started until you get your jetting right.
Start with idle mixture 1 turn out
