cuts off

I have a 2006 XL1200L that will turn off when I'm at a light or stopped for any reason, it will crank up fine then wants to turn off when I come to a stop, seems to me the idle needs adjusting, is there a way to adjust the idle without taking off the cover to the air filter? Any suggestion would be appreciated. Oh and it backfires out of the exhaust when I reve it up when it's about to cut off.

Thanks,
TC

idle screw is located on the right upper side of the cv carb.
it can be adj. with a small phillips screw driver without taking the air box off.
the pop at idle would signal a lean idle condition.
the idle/fuel adj. is located behind the cv carb bottom/center and requires that you drill out the small brass plug thats pressed into the adj. hole.
you will have to remove the air box and rotate the carb in order to do this.
when you drill. take note not to drill to deep! if you do, you'll hit the adj. screw, and damage the seat in the carb.
