1998 Fxd running crappy

Hey guys I'm new to the forum!

I just bought a 1998 Fxd(see signature) it has pipes and a hi flo air cleaner. The reason I'm posting is it's running really lean. I pulled the plugs and they are very white. Only around the ground and center electrodes though. The base of the plug seems like a good blackish color. I just took the tank off and put on new throttle cables and fuel lines. The bike was left outside and everything is pretty gummed up and rusty. While riding the bike pops a lot when you let of the throttle or coast down a hill on the compression. It also is pretty sluggish when you first get on the throttle. The guy I bought it from said it had a carb upgrade but didn't didn't know the jet size or anything. I'm gunna to take the carb of this weekend and really clean everything well. I'm just wondering if I should re jet( beacuse I don't know what's in there now) or what else I could try to get it running better. It does have the mixture screw opened and I have it turned out almost to the point where it will fall out. I'm also wondering what people are running for jet sizes with the similar se pipes and k&n set up I've got.

Thanks guys!

took the carb off cleaned it all up. It was pretty dirty. Has is has a 185 main and 45 pilot. Put it back on and it was no better. Brought it to a buddy who builds bikes. He took the accelorater pump apart and the diaphram was torn all up. New diaphram and it runs like a dream!!!!!

It won't pop with a 45 pilot, but the plugs may be a tad too white. I just swapped out my 45 for a 48 and it runs just as good, but the plugs are tanner..... Tan=good. White=bad.

I also suggest shimming the needle jet by 0.05" to get more fuel in the midrange. Too many people skip this step.....

Thanks guys! It's still caughing some when you rev it from idle. So I think I'm gunna go with a 48 pilot. Sucks to have to take carb off again that was a mother getting back on. Wait. Can I I just take the bowl off and get at it from underneath with removing the carb?

Thanks again for the help

It's easy to swap jets with the carb on the bike. Just take the aircleaner housing off first.

If it's dogging coming off idle, then you may have a leaking accelerator pump diaphram, which is also accessable from under the carb, and not removing the carb as well.

There's 3 screws and wa-la....

It's sold separate at your dealer. It doesn't come in a carb kit....
