Unhappy Fuel Gauge Question

Found the fuel gauge on my bike (you know the part on the left side of the tank that says "Do Not Twist") all askewed and cock-eyed. I pushed it back in place and it seems alright (gas guage works), but I was wondering if I needed to do anything else, such as sealing it, etc. Don't know how it popped out (someone messin' with it probably)? Would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks
