Tried to start up my 1990 FLTHP after a 4 months rebuild. My exhaust seems to have turned into a shotgun. When I hit the starter button without touching the throttle nothing happens. If I turn the throttle a little bit, the engine turns over several times and then I get a shotgun blast from the exhaust. It seems that gasoline gets into the exhaust system and explodes there.
During the ovehaul I took the carb apart and cleaned it. It seemed to be in good condition.
I took off the air cleaner to see how the carb behaves and it seems that if I turn the throttle only a little bit the accelerator pump nossle shoots a heavy stream into the manifold. Now, my question is this:
When and how is this accelerator pump supposed to work?
Is it possible that I may have assembled the carb wrongly? I have experience and I have cleaned and overhauled carbs before, but never one with accelerator pump I think.
