Need tuning help.

Finally got this thing running, but not very well. The plugs were black with dry soot, so I put in new ones. Went for a ride and it starting running worse and worse. Very choppy idle, missing acceleration, and dies out. I thought it was the old gas from last year, so I drain it and put in fresh stuff. No change. I pulled the new plugs and they are totally black with soot. Now I'm assuming that means I'm running rich. I have an S&S330 carb. Please tell me what to do.

Found the S&S instruction webpage. I think I need to re-jet the carb.

How did it run when you got it? I'm just wondering if the needle and seat have old gunky gas in it, causing the bike to run rich.....

The seller just drove up the block and back with it. When I first starting riding it, it seemed okay, but it got progressively worse. The plugs were black in 15 minutes.

The carb probably needs internal cleaning, Chris. I'd also add some Seafoam to the gas, to help clean some of the smaller fuel passages.

Does this have Electronic ignition or points?

and (forgive me if I'm wrong) but lean it out a little, if your plugs get that black that quick, it's a sign of being way too rich, am I correct?

Went step-by-step through the S&S carb adjustments and it's running really nice now. It winds out, and idles nice. Haven't pulled the new plugs yet, but judging by how it's running, I bet they're good. Thanks.
