Heritage Softtail Idle too high!!

Hey all,,,,,, Nice to meet every one here...... I have a 2002 Heritage Softtail EFI and it idles way too high.... I have heard that they dont oil/cool well at a lower idle.... has anyone here heard this and if so what would be a safe lower idle rpm??? I do know you need something to set the idle on a EFI it's not like the old carbs just turn the screw.......
Thanks for your help,,,,,

Oil/cooling has nothing to do with it. Idle on an EFI should be at 1050-1100 or below that, the charging system fails to preoduce enough electricity to run the ECU, Fuel pump etc.

What's "Way too high?"

I don't have any way of know exact rpm yet... so I know a guy who has the equipment to read and set the idle rpm..... I don't let it idle except for @ a stop sign or light.... so I would think the battery would carry that for the ecm and pump?????
Thanks

I don't know what you're asking. The battery *would* carry it, only after idling for so long, without the proper voltage being supplied to the battery because the idle is too low, the battery runs out of voltage to supply electrical devices.

The newer Stators/Voltage regulators don't put out 100% all the time and bleed off the unneccery voltage like my Evo does, rather, only procudes what the bike needs, based on demand/rpm.

If you don't have a tach, or truely know what the rpms are, the how do you know they're "too high", or are you just going by sound?

If you have a friend that has the stuff to read and set the idle, then I suggest that, rather then just turning screws. 1050 is the goal. No lower then 950.

First off there are NO screws!!!!!!!!!!!!! EFI!!!!!! and yes I am going by sound and the fact that idleing in second gear is 25MPH is not right..... every one I ride with says it's too high/fast of idle rpm..... I have been a mechanic all my life in one form or another and do understand how a battery works...... all I said was for the 30 seconds that I let it idle @ a stop light shouldn't be a problem....... I was trying to get the rpm range that the idle should be before taking it to have it set correctly...

You may have a faulty IAC , this device controls the idle speed . Take off the air cleaner and look into the throttle body , at the top of the air horn there is a hole , look up into the hole and cycle the ignition you should see the IAC pintle move open , close , open . If it doesn't do that or doesn't do anything then the IAC or IAC circuit is faulty .
