Stage One
I ride a 2007 Harley Road King and I have purchased BUB Rinehart slip-on pipes for it. My local Harley Dealership says if I put the pipes on my bike, I will have to also put a Stage One kit on the bike. They said if I didn't, the bike would over-heat and it would burn a hole in my pistons.
My question is.....is this necessary or are they just trying to make a buck?

on that one i would go with just trying to make a buck. I do not believe that the bub slip ons are that much more free flowing than the stock pipes. But it is common protocol to suggest taking a bigger breath in, if your letting out a bigger exhale. But i cant see you burning a hole in your piston with slip on pipes

{sigh} Yes....you *should* go with a stage one remap. It's NOT a sales pitch. Most everything else they say is, but this isn't....
Will it burn holes in your pistons? No.....gross over exageration. Like saying masturbation makes you insane and will go blind.
Your bike runs lean NOW. Your factory ECU settings are to make the bike run at 14.7:1 a/f ratio, as much as possible.
The problem with that is at 3500-4500 rpm range, on a dyno, it's too lean. Adding free-flowing pipes, and NO REMAP will only make that worse.
ADDING A STAGE ONE REMAP TO A STOCK BIKE WOULD MAKE IT RUN BETTER, WITH STOCK PIPES AND AIR FILTER.
Sorry if it looked like I was yelling.....but i was...
If you add the Rineharts, the probabilty of the bike running fine is about 90%. If you have a warranty issue down the road, count on your dealer telling you the pipes caused it, (engine related) and refusing to fix it.
HD will tell you that Screaming Eagle pipes can be run without a stage one upgrade, but that's because they sell them.
It's your bike. Do what you want.
