iPhone for gps?
Anyone use their iphone as a gps? The apps (tom tom and navigon) are obviously not as good as a dedicated gps, but a whole lot cheaper.

I do but just to look up directions. It lacks the ability to choose between shortest distance or quickest route. It will only stay awake for a few minutes and operating the control while riding a bike is next to impossible. It is very accurate especially when you are on the cell network. I also like the ability to be able to swithch from street view to satelite or hybrid. While it doesn't replace a dedicated GPS it is a functional alternative and much better than a map. Think of it as a smart map.

Talking w/ AT&T they said the one they provide for $10 a month is best. The TOM-TOM app I believe is $89., but NO voice I heard, if thats true, pretty useless?

It's pretty useful right out of the box although as DCLXVI said it doesnt really replace an all out GPS unit. If you are willing to pull over it can be a most useful tool. I dont know anyone who has used the GPS APPs though. I just used it today in the cage because I couldnt find the car mount for the Zumo. Very accurate.

i use it to find out were im going or where i am. en route directions are not its strong suit. i have heard good things about tom tom and at&t navigation. its spot on for just finding youre gps location and planning a route with the map.
it was the best purchase ive made in a while

Google Maps Navigation
Google just announced turn-by-turn driving directions for Android phones. It's rumored they've already submitted an iPhone version too, though it's unclear when that will hit the streets. This should remove the need for TomTom, the AT&T service or equivalent, paid apps on the iPhone, though we'll only be able to confirm once the app is in our hands.

That said, my iPhone is not waterproof or vibration proof and, as you said, is terrible to use with gloves. I'm probably going to stick with a dedicated GPS on the bike for the foreseeable future.

google maps mobile thingy. i just downloaded it on my new phone last night. my wife has had it on her blackberry and if we get lost just pull over tell it where youre going and it gives you directions. plus has a map so you can just look at that and see where you are. best deal i think. since its free.

I use an app called Navigon and I actually like it better, as an app, than my Garmin stand-alone GPS! I have used TomTom and it's pretty worthless. Navigon is ~$90 but it's worth it, IMO.

Navigon looks great, however that google navigation for the Droid looks killer.
Maybe just buy the droid phone, I love mac, just not ATT
