Thumbs down Dodged a bullet?

Hello. I found a 92 Sportster on Craigslist. I talked to the seller, and he said that it ran good when he parked it, but now it needed a new battery.
I told him I had the cash, and asked him if I went to the expense of buying a new battery, would he hold the bike for 24 hours, and he agreed.
This was at 5:50pm.
The next morning, I bought the battery, 2 gallons of gas in a can, and drove to his house. No bike in sight.
His response? "I guess I should have called you, I sold it last night."
I almost made him eat the battery.
I'm wondering, did he sell it fast because I was going to try and start it?
Now I am sad because I have a Sportster battery (and oil filter and light bulbs) and no Sportster.
(Why a 92? Black engine, little chrome, belt drive and carb. The perfect combo.)

Or the seller knew there was more work needed than just a battery and didn't want you to put it in only to find it wouldn't run at all?

I ain't gonna squash it and you don't need to wash it.

Dodged a bullet?
Guy I know was clearing some trees and brush with a bulldozer on a farm, one of the windows shattered. He thought a tree limb or some brush had got to it some how..then he heard a thud followed by another thud.

He was being shot at!!
Found out later,
Some ten year old kid from a long ways away was taking shots at him

Thats doging a bullet!

Old Biker told me once..Its doesn't matter how many brain cells you kill, but how many you had to begin with ?

Oh, sure, it's perfectly okay to break your word for cash.
I was offering to buy a bike, not finance his political campaign.
As for all of the parts, I've bought enough bikes to know what to bring with me when I'm expecting to ride one home.
