If the air cleaner is open all the way around, the filter totally exposed then it would not hurt to carry one.

In my experience with any A/C it takes getting caught in a pretty good down pour. Or in a moderate one for a length of time for it to become saturated enough to start affecting the bike.

But I have never run a A/F that was open 360 degrees.

Having said that. My current build will be running a filtered velocity stack.
I will be carrying a rain sock. Just in case.

I have an old school-looking AC on my RK, so I threw a rain sock in the saddle bag. But what are the chances of getting caught in a rainstorm south of Seattle? FWIT, since January 1, there have been four days without measureable rainfall. This sh*t is really getting old.

I have a rain sock on my 09 UG , the only time I take it off is when I wash the filter, it does a real good job of keeping bugs and sand from entering the filter.

My friend with a Street Glide and open filter complained that his bike ran poorly in rain. We told him to put the sock on, and he said no more problems, ran good. But it was difficult to get on .
