I commend you, Lou, on handling it the way you did. I saw a thread that was many, many, many pages on another forum related to a bike I recently bought that was kind of upsetting. A guy sold another guy a part (tires, I believe) and didn't uphold his end of the deal. Well, the fallout was phenomenal and, actually, somewhat epic in proportion.
Basically, the buyer and several members essentially publicly filleted the guy. They found the guy on other sites of a sexual nature - apparently the guy was bi-sexual. They contacted the guy's in-laws. It was way, way, way over the top. Of course, there were 50 to 85 pages of commentary on the guy, so it was that much worse.
Finally, the guy returned to find all the crap that had been smeared on him and he actually had a somewhat decent explanation, although it had been quit some time.
Anyway, good for you for being above that kind of stuff. Glad it worked out for you, too!
