I have owned Sporty's and Softails and ridden the Ultra's over the last 20 years but I have owned a RKC since the start of '09 and it is hands down the best all around bike I have ever owned or ridden. I average 13-15K a year mileage wise, wife and I did a 14 day 6K mile trip in '09 and were not really tired till the last day.
I can go from having a solo seat and no windshield to full two up seat with a tour pak and wind shield in less than five minutes....................Doesn't get much more versatile than that.

I had a 2012 Flhrc for a short while, and from the get go, it was the best handling, best riding Harley I have ever owned. I ran out of things to put on it, and got a 2013 Street Glide to put a fortune into.
I feel the classic is the epitome of what a motorcycle should and does look like. Getcha one!

I have a 00 Wide Glide, and I really like it. My brother has an 05 RK Custom, which I had the luxury of riding. I think I know why they call it a Road King.

I was dead set on a new RK myself, a lot of people I know own them and swear by them.
When I got to test riding I found I liked the Road Glide better than the RK, even though the RK is one sweet ride.
So I bought a 2012 Road Glide in September.
I'd say ride every model you can and pick what YOU like, whatever you pick will probably be around for a long time.

My 2000 RK is the best looking/riding bike I've ever owned (I've owned British and Japanese) no regrets at all buying it.....

I personally think that a tastefully done RKC is the absolute incarnation of a drop dead georgeous classic motorcycle. I would love to have one, but I just can't justify two touring bikes. That being said... I don't think I'd trade my SG for one. I love the batwing and tunes. But if I was Jay Leno, I'd have a RKC in every color!

I've always tell first timmers that if you could only own one bike, get a Road King. If you can afford it, get a Dyna and an Electra Glide.
