I bought a new 2011 Fat Bob in April, 2011. Bought the ESP, my dealer charged me $1,584. (Maybe a buck per engine cc?). In August, this year, I cashed it in as I ordered a 2013 RGC and as I was going to sell or trade the Fat Bob and didn't think a private buyer would want to spring for the ESP. Of course, if they wanted it they could still buy it as bike is still under 2-year HD warranty, and if I didn't sell it (which is the case) I would have had to cash it in anyway as a dealer can't get the ESP if I trade. Got back $1,248. Since the ESP purchase I have learned not all dealers sell an ESP for the same price.
In pricing the ESP for a 2013 RGC one dealer here wanted $1,989, the other dealer wanted $1,739. But...., I checked with a local credit union that sells ESP's for bikes. They have a 5-year plan, also with a $50 deductible, and although their ESP doesn't cover absolutely everything like the HD plan does it does cover all the major components and then some. The credit union price (if I bought it now) is $774--less than half a HD plan.
So, I will wait on buying any plan until my 2-year HD warranty is about up then, I may buy the credit union plan if my bike has any serious issues during the 2-year warranty.
My thinking is to get the big items covered and roll the dice on the smaller stuff. Now if my bike ever gets here I will be a happy camper.
