I own a Harley so, I can afford to pay more?
Seems like people see me roll up on my bike and assume I can pay more fore stuff.
I went down the boat shop to get some new #2 battery cable for my boat and I pulled up in my truck. The price was $3.60 a foot. I went back 2 weeks later on my bike wearing the same type clothing to get more wire for another job. The owner saw me pull up on the bike and the price was now $7.50. I asked why the price jumped and he said what are you talking about. I told him I bought some from him 2 weeks ago and he said he dosn't remember me and no he didn't sell wire at $3.60 a foot.
I said huh, well no thanks then. I went to Napa and got the same cable at $3.80 a ft with my discount. I stopped by the boat shop the next day and showed the owner the reciept and then the one from Napa and showed him I only lost 6 bucks and he lost a hundred bucks. I said I won't be back and all my friends, neighbors and customers will hear about it and rolled out the door.
That's not the 5th time someone jacked up prices because they saw a Harley. Anyone else see to? I've also met more cool people and seen prices drop because of the bike. I guess Harley strikes everyone differently.

what a prick ! tell as many people as you can! discrimination aimed at bikers is not on but as we all know exists as far too many folks judge the book by it's cover.
take care.

Good job. Glad you told him off good. Even if the boat shop was selling #2 "boat cable", you can buy that for $5/foot easily and since you ended up buying it at NAPA it doesn't sound like you were buying boat cable. That price for regular copper cable is outrageous!

It sounds bad and he may be right, guy was trying to screw him. Especially since he acted "dumb" about a previous sale.
Having said that I carry a lot of "parts and pieces" on my service truck and when I use them they are sold not at a cost based on what I paid for them, but based on a cost of what I'll have to spend to replace them. There are some things it's pretty much a given I'll use almost every day and if I don't keep them stocked it's only going to cost more for me to go get them. Very few things have gone down in price.
Copper in any finished form has gone up and judging from scrap prices it's going to get worse, if I bid a job that involves copper fittings or pipe 1 week is about all it's good for, come back 2-3 weeks later and it's pretty much a given I'll have to up it some.
Manufactured parts such as equipment or controls are fairly stable but that's about the only items.
7+ bucks a foot for battery cable which is probably #2 stranded does seem high but I've not priced wire lately.
Another factor when dealing with wholesale houses is how much you buy and how well do you pay your bills. Around here I'll get a better price than someone walking in off the street, if they will even sell to you. I'll get a better price than some contractors, just as some will get better pricing than me.
So it's hard to say, however if someone calls me on parts or labor pricing I'll tell them why it is and they can go somewhere else or call someone else next time. I wouldn't just act "dumb" about it, that tells me either he may have been gouging or bad when it comes to customer relations.
