Photo of the Month

Kainam's thread allowing us members to vote for the December photo of the month seems to have raised a lot of questions and opinions.

I would like to relay the concept as best as I understand it. If I am wrong I am sure a mod will step in and correct me.

1. It was not meant to be a competition. K has just always chosen a photo for the main page of the forum. He chooses those pictures from the general gallery on the forum.

2. Photos that are hosted on other site are not eligible.

3. Any picture that has been uploaded to the gallery within 25 days of the end of the previous month is eligible.

4. Not every month is going to be decided with a poll. Again, it is not meant to be a competition.

This part is my opinion. As a "contestant" in the ongoing poll, I hope it matters to the mods and members.

I feel very strongly that this should not be a competition or a popularity contest. It should not be solely based on composition, lighting, colors or any other photography jargon. It should be based on whichever picture you would like to see on the main page. That is it, clear and simple. After all this is a motorcycle forum, not a photography forum.

You got it JP other than I go back 30 days to look at the photos.... there just isn't a quick link in the gallery that says "30 days" when looking for the newest photos.... just gotta modify the url manually to change it from 25 days to 30. Not sure why the forum was setup as 25 days for the default value....

And there is no prize for photo of the month other than having your photo shown on the main page for all to see and be recognized, and in that case JP and JamStar have both already "won" for the month of December.

And to add to JP's thoughts, I don't think photo of the month should be based on who has the best photography equipment. Subject matter and composition play a big role.

This is mainly an idea not only to see what kind of interest there is on this kind of thing for photo submissions, but also comments from the membership on the photos themselves.

I respectfully disagree that composition, color or any other photo jargon are not part of selecting the photo. If asked to pick between two photos we are all going to apply the criteria that we individually feel matters in that decision. For me, it involves an assessment of the content as well as the aesthetics of composition, lighting, etc as they play a role in how visually pleasing the photo is.
If I exclude my own feelings about the bikes, and exclude my opinions on the quality of the photo, the only thing left is either a choice between two posters, or a coin toss, and the admin can do the latter without polling members.
So now I'm totally confused about the criteria for selecting a photo.

I was only trying to say that this is not a photography forum and those of us with some background in photography should be able to dominate the photo of the month thread.

There have a couple of comments voting for the Wide Glide because you can see more of the bike. I think that is a great point of view since its all about the bike.
