Anyone use heavier than 20w50 in the summer? Amsoil...
I run Mobil 1 20w50 and I'm wondering if I should move up to a heavy weight, like Amsoil 50 or 60 weight racing oil. I'm in South Carolina, regularly 95+ in the summer. A buddy of mine running dino oil uses HD 60w in the summer. Just curious if that's standard or if my M1 or Amsoil 20w50 is sufficient in extreme heat.
I'm sure this has come up before, but not letting me search on 3 letter words makes it hard to find if it has!
I'm on a 2005 Wide Glide, high compression 95" kit, SE cams, race ignition, SE heads....
Thanks for any input.

Just my 2 cents, I run Amsoil 20w-50 in Texas heat, also a 95" 2005 but w/o the other upgrades you have, I need an oil cooler if only to increase capacity a bit and you prolly do too. Has you bike ever gone into heat management mode where it skips strokes?

I have been looking at oil coolers, will probably get one very soon. I'm also carbureted.... I've never heard of heat management mode but I'm guessing it's just on the injected models? If mine does have it, no, it hasn't done that to me yet. I suppose I'll get one of those oil temp gauges for my dipstick, I wish they made an analog one for mine and not just a digital.

Maybe it is just EFI bikes, it goes into one lung mode on alternate cylinders to just pump one cycle of cold air and let the engine cool, only does it if cylinder head temp is above 275 and bike is sitting still, like stuck in traffic. Sounds wierd, but goes away as soon as you start mooving
I think we heard the consensus on the digital gauges is they are junk
You might like this idea, it only cost $16 and it can't hurt. Nice to have found a 4" tall filter so both the contact and radiation surface is maximum..

That is a good idea.... I may have to get a crappy digital gauge anyway, it'll be interesting to see what the temp changes are like after the addition of an oil cooler, different oil, etc...

20w50 dino oil. Going to change it out and run 20w60 syn. Up to this point I've always run 70w in the summer.
