Harley-Davidson Trivia Thread

The guy that rebuilt my Panhead motor is big on this and he always hits us with good stuff while hanging out at the shop. Heres a good one from today.....

As we all know the Knucklehead motor was produced by the factory from 1936-1947. However there were some Knucks produced in 1948 and are still on the road with 1948 vin#. 48EL####/48FL####. From what he said, when Panheads went into production they still had some Knuck top ends in the factory, So they ran them.....

I got a lot more but I would like to research before posting.

Anybody got any H-D trivia?

Rob

It's true. HD sold the tooling to make Flatheads to Rikuo in 1932, with production starting in 1933. They were one of the first, if not the first, motorcycles made in Japan. Prior to this, HD sold motorcycles to Japan first during WW I for military use. In 1924 Harleys were sold in Japan to the general public.

Rikuo made flatheads all the way up to 1958, and new motorcycles were made from in stock parts up until 1960.

I think they ran Knucks in Servicars until about 73. How about the 1941 and/or 2 flat opposed motors and shaft drive??

Heres another bit of H-D trivia that I haven't been able to find info to back it up but its interesting anyway. As most of you know, the EL models, 1000 cc Knucks and then Pans were produced from 1936-1952 making the EL Panhead a more rare find then a FL. My Panhead is a EL. Now FL Knuckleheads are a rare find amongst Knucks and I was told that the reason why was because at the onset of WW2 The company shut down the FL line to produce the 90,000 WLA's for the war effort but continued to run the EL line for civilians. Can't back that up but I do find it interesting.

I read here that during the War effort H-D was only producing "War Bikes". FL's being produced from 41 - 47. So I quess that shoots that theory down. Does anyone know if theres a site on the web that gives a breakdown of how many of each models were made throught the history of the Moco?
