79 Shovelhead Starting Problem

When I go to start my bike, the engine cranks a few times then it sounds like the started drive slips out and spins freely. I can hear it spinning. I'm a novice mechanic at best. Could anyone point me in a direction where to start? Starter motor? Solenoid?

starter drive,very common problem,replace with a accell,or another USA made one,china ones are junk

if you use the accell you have to take more of the bike apart it is larger but worth it extra berrings

First make sure your battery has at least 12.7v across the terminals and all battery connections are clean and tight , also solenoid wire connections .
