Cold idle problem

This is my first post so I hope I put it in the right section. I have a 2003 Screaming Eagle Road King that sometimes takes 4 to 7 minutes to come off fast idle when cold. It doesn't always do this but more often than not this is the situation. I'm thinking it might be the temp sensor. I don't trust the local Harley dealer so I can't ask them. An independent shop said it could be an air leak. It runs fine when warmed up. I would think if there was an air leak this would not be the case. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

To me it sounds normal depending on what the outside temp is an engine can/will do this.

If I'm wrong someone will step in.

I should have said it runs at 1800 RPM on FIRST START UP for 4 to 7 minutes. It does this even when the weather is warm.

Could be dead wrong here but it sounds like you've got something sticking more than a cold idle. When it warms up maybe it gets unstuck?? Just a thought.

Got Gold... I have the same bike as you!! Gold SE Road King '03. Until now it's the only Gold one I've seen.
Anyhow, you can goose it and it stays at 1800 RPM. It's not a cable issue. I'm trying to get as many suggestion as I can before I tear into it. I hate to buy a temp sensor if that isn't the problem. Thanks for the suggestion

Nice bike... wait I just paid myself a compliment too.... The EFI thing puzzles me, I am use to a carb. Have you tried the basics like cleaning the throttle body? Checking to make sure the butterfly closes completely.

My V-Rod is EFI so I'm somewhat familiar. Ive also used Sea Foam in at least 8 or 9 tanks. I've only had the bike for about a month. The bike really runs great. it's got a thunder Header and a Race Tuner. Dynoed at just under 103 HP on Fullerton Harleys dyno. Not as quick as my V-rod but pretty quick for a 103 motor. It just doesn't want to come off fast idle in a reasonable amount of time. I know the temp sensor can cause this but trying to investigate any other possibilities before I start spending money.

Sounds like you've covered some ground, I can't give you anymore insight on this problem. Mine came in at around 102 dyno'd if memory serves. Its fast enough for me thats for sure. Good luck. I'm sure one of our experts can help ya from here.

I wouldn't rule out intake gaskets but they generally don't reseal when warm even with cylinder growth. I use starting fluid to find leaks not WD40. I've found leaks that wd40 didn't raise the idle. Be careful not to get it in the back of the air cleaner and get a false reading.

If a temp sensor goes bad the bike will have a power loss when hot and cough black smoke. The bike is mapped to run in the low 12's AFR when cold. (12.1:1 I think.) If the sensor goes bad the bike gets warm and runs too rich. Your issue sounds like a tps sensor that's out of spec or someone's been turning screws that shouldn't be turned.

LST thing that comes to mind is the 2001-2006 touring efi throttle bodies and intakes are one piece. The butterfly shaft breaks causing your issue as well. It may be cracked and uninfected. The part is on backorder from time to time.
