1997 Sportster Tail Light Removal

Rear tail light lens fell off this morning, trashed. Can't get the tail light housing off. Looks like the housing is attached to the mudguard by two studs which seem to form part of the housing. Removed the tabs fromthe studs but I still can't detach the housing.
Can anyone suggest how to get the tail light housing off, thanks.

There's just the 2 screws that hold the lens on, (which I find odd that they came undone to lose the lens) and the 2 7/16" nuts that hold the housing to the fender.
