2009 Harley-Davidson Sportster Iron 883 Preview

Harley-Davidson recently unveiled the Iron 883 as the latest addition to its phantom Dark Custom line. The Darks aren't a separate model line, but more like a sinister club or collection of single models culled from Harley's prolific arsenal of existing V-Twins: the Dynas, Sportsters and Softails.

The underpinning theme with a Dark is pared-down, no-nonsense styling, eschewing chrome and brightness in favor of muted, basic color schemes – namely black. And for a few of them there's a decidedly deliberate chopped and bobbed influence.

As a theme, Dark Custom didn't make an official appearance until the January 2008 introduction of a Softail Springer that received the chopped/bobbed/black-out treatment and the name Cross Bones. It was at this Hollywood premiere-style unveiling of the 'Bones that Willie G. Davidson and son Bill told the moto-world about the birth of this new shadow series of motorcycles.

I just bought one a week ago, and it's a pretty sweet ride at a great price. Because of the price, there's plenty of room for mods: mini-ape bars, highway pegs, and muffler. So far, all my friends have been commenting on how sweet the bike looks (even the sports bike guys are won over). I'm happy with it so far- a good solid bike!

I also just got one! I picked it up yesterday. I got the vance and hines exhaust w/ a screamin eagle stage 1 air cleaner. Everyone that i have come in contact with love the look of the bike. It's a great ride! I don't think i've ever been this excited just to head down to the local corner store.

Hey, I was just about to do my exhaust too- I'm new to fuel injected bikes and was wondering: did you have to mess with the chip at all? Or did you simply slip on the vance and hines + eagle air cleaner and it runs good?

I was wondering the same thing...I recently changed the pipes on my Nightster from stock to Screamin' Eagle black ceramics with midnight gray wrap on the header pipes. I didn't do anything with the EFI system, and the bike runs fine. I'm going to put on a SE Stage 1 air filter with the download at the end of this month (when my bonus check hits the bank!) and am wondering if this is all I need do, or should I start looking at a Power Commander or something like that?

The ECM was reset to accept the exhaust and air cleaner upgrade.

Thought that was all it needs....beats the hell out of shelling out $450 for a Power Commander!

Ah, so there's an O2 sensor- sweet. I'm thinking about those 2-to-1 exhausts like from Kerker...

In the meantime, I just put on mini-ape's, highway pegs, headlight rims and it's looking pretty sweet. I'm wondering about suspension as well- the Iron seems to be pretty stiff. If you're not watching and you hit a pothole, it sends you flying. I currently have it on the lowest setting, too. Is there a softer solution out there?

New to this forum and have a question.
Just picked up my new Iron and can't wait to make a few changes. I want to put the vance and hines pipes on the bike but I have fwd controls on it.
Can anyone tell me if the pipes will still work or do I have to go with something else??

The V&H pipes are dope with the Screaming Eagle air cleaner, make sure you get the Tuner in order to make all your purchases worth it. I can keep up with my homies Nightster and Nightrain with no problem. Instead of mini apes I oped for some Biltwell Clubman bars for that low bar cafe look and some old school grips. Stripped of the front fender, chain guard, added a tank lift, Mustang seat, and building custom sissy bar. The bikes almost there.
