My only Son

So I wake up this morning to check on things and the first thing that caught my eye was an Email from my son! He titled it "I know I am wordy" so I said to myself...I should check everything else and then read it. But, I chose not to and gave him the honor of the first read of the day.

I'm a lucky Dad I must say! He is my only son from a previous mariage. My son and I both celebrate our birthday's the same day. He will be 21 this month with 2 years of a private university education from NY and now a Junior at DePaul University in Chicago. The only major thing that I would disagree on is that he brought to Chicago his girlfriend.

So his Email goes like this...(sorry for sharing)

Dad,

At the end of the day, despite what it seems sometimes, I try my best. I try my best to impress you, constantly seeking your approval, and to know that you agree with what I am doing. As I begin making decisions on my own, I often reflect on what I have learned from you. You have taught me to be well rounded, and to be adaptable, but also to be more responsible and mature than my peers. It was you that taught me the values of patience and you gave me the level head that sits on my shoulders.

The values that you have instilled in me were always mixed in with good times and wonderful memories. I visit the times that I spent living with you and how much fun we had as you helped me mature. The stupid things like driving the truck around while sitting on your lap, or going to karate and bringing home that next belt. I remember the time my bike tire blew out while you were jogging with Tom from across the street. I remember the scorpion bike you got me, and the device that clocked my speed. I remember the nerf gun wars, and the bb guns. At the end of the day, I hope that I will be as good of a father and that I can one day take my son to “the eye of the storm.” I appreciate everything we have done together. You are truly the greatest person to have ever been a part of my life, and every day I am honored to be your “son".

There is more! I might post later!

No money here! All gone! It's more of his determination to be better. I wanted to send him to local College for the first couple years but he wanted a good and real education. When he was growing up, I was always consistent with his homework and the rules/values of running a home.

If he did something half-fast, I would trash it up and had him start all over. He learned quick and all it took from me when something was not going right....the signature look! The eye braws going to the top of my head look. I did not fear getting a switch to discipline him and he knew that. I can't remember ever spanking him either! I guess that look really work.
