Ignition Timing on a Shovelhead
I just bought my first HD it's a 1983 FLHT Electra Glide with 18,000 miles. The bike runs good but it's not quite rite. It acts like there is a timing issue. The exhaust will backfire when downshifting, and when turning the ignition on the exhaust will huff and the engine will turn a little on it's own. When sarting it up it hesitates to turn over at first. I do not know anything about these but it acts like the timing needs bumped up a bit.
This bike is a virgin, as best I can tell nothing has ever been apart on it. The timing cover (at least I think it's the timing cover) has two rivits in it? The bike has an S&S carb and air cleaner but everything else looks stock.
What should I look for, am I on the right track with the timing?
