Giving up fuel economy

SO in order to upgrade from the quite stock pipes you pretty much have to give up fuel economy?

Being new to Harley's (09 Heritage Classic) I am on a fast track to learning what the stage 1 upgrade entails.

Please let me know if I am correct here.

Changing out the pipes can and usually does make for a lean running engine, which I'm finding out, so in order to fix this you have to change the way air flows by way of opening up intake and adding more fuel via EFI tuning device along with an air cleaner. Adding more fuel means a drop in gas mileage, depending on the bike and setup this will differ.

You're correct. It's not just on HD's rather any vehicle that is basically EPA compliant, then is remapped/jetted for more fuel and performance.

Fuel=horsepower.

14.7:1 is a lean mixture. Running the bike in the low 13-12 ratio makes the bike richer, cooler more power, but used more fuel. You may go from a 40-42 mpg to a 34-36 mpg.

You will also cut down on the heat and by keeping the engine cooler you increase the longevity of the engine. The added power will allow you to run a taller gear with out lugging and if you try really really really really hard you can come close to your old milage figure.
