Screamin' Eagle Ignition Race Tuner, '05 FXDL
This might be more of a computer question. I'm honestly unsure of where the problem is.
My friend bought a SE Ignition Race Tuner for his carbureted '05 FXDL. Unfortunately, neither his computer nor mine have a serial port to connect with the tuner. He went to Radio Shack and bought a serial-USB cord and we've installed it on both our laptops. The cord has its own drivers, and appears in both our Device Managers in port COM4. However, with the ignition on, run switch on, neither of us are getting a "reply from module." That is to say, the device is using COM4, the software is using COM4, the software can communicate TO the module, but is not getting a reply FROM the module.
Can anyone help us solve our issue? Is it a cable problem? Computer problem? Module problem?
Thanks for your help.

Update: We acquired a desktop computer with a serial port, and were still unable to connect to the IRT. Diagnosis is the module is bad, and needs replacing.

Nor sure of the SERT comm protocol, or if you need configuaration software to communicate, but in industrial PLC/VFD/Proportional control devices I had nothing but trouble with USB-serial adapters.
I ended up using PCMIA - serial and it has worked everytime.

Uhm ... SERT race tuner is for EFI not carb , explaining why SERT diagnosis is determining the module is bad .

IRT - Screamin' Eagle Ignition Race Tuner.
It's a small, external module that connects to the 4-pin data connector on the bike. It also has a serial port on the output side to connect to the PC. It allows for customization of spark advance, and some other details (I've forgotten what), but not much else, since the bike is carbureted. There is no record function, nothing to do with the module except connect and modify. We can connect to the module, but the module will not reply, regardless if the cable is a pure RS-232 (serial) cable, or if it's a serial-USB device. Ergo, we believe the module is bad, and must be replaced.

Yes, but do you need comms or configuration software for the PC to communicate with it. I use tons of RS232 devices and they all need some type of software on my PC to allow me to configure it.

Just did a search at the HD website for Race Tuners . One thing I noticed is that the Race Tuner and newer Super Tuner are only supported in Windows XP !
Of 171 hits none came up for carb Race Tuner .
The carbed version of the SE ignition is a replacement ignition module which has adjustable timing curves as well as increased rev limit .
What's the part number of the kit you're useing , maybe I can locate some info with that ?

Take a look at HD 32124-04B. The kit includes the tuner, cables, and software. It allows the customer to adjust the rev limit, and spark advance.
Thanks for your help!

Yes, in the end, we had tried three computers: two laptops and an old desktop, all running Windows XP Pro and the included IRT software. All computers ran into the same problem, "Module did not reply."
