1998 roadking evo upgrade question
Hi,
I am new to this site. Thanks in advance for your responses.
1998 roadking with efi evo. 43,000 kms
I recently took my bike in to get the rocker box cover gaskets replaced. Oil was coming out the front cylinder and dripping on the front exhaust manifold. When I picked the bike up, The mechanic said that the head gaskets were also leaking. He sprayed some type of brake cleaner on the running motor around the head gasket and the engine sputtered. I would have thought that there would be exhaust coming from the head gasket or something but the engine runs well with lots of power. any thoughts?
The engine has the stage one with increased breather, EFI calibration and exhaust treatments. I am wondering if I need to replace the head gaskets, and if so would; 1) the upgraded Screamin eagle heads with stock pistons be a good idea? 2) do I need to upgrade the cam if i put on the new heads?
with 42,000 kms should I get a big bore kit?
Thanks!!
Andy

If left long enough with a head gasket leaking, you will erode the sealing area on the head.
IMO, putting upgraded heads on a bike with a stock cam wouldn't be money well spent.
But, if you're looking for a good winter project, then a big bore kit, cams, and sending off your stock heads to be ported would be a great project.
I'd do all 3 at the same time. If not all 3, heads and cam would be a nice combo as well.

Thanks guys,
Ok so what I am hearing is that I should get a new cam, perhaps get an 88 cid big bore kit and send my stock heads out for porting and polishing. The money I would save by keeping my heads would pay for the big bore kit give or take.
Do the dealers mind if you do your own work and then ask them to re-map the EFI?

I suppose it depends on the dealer, but Ive never had any problem asking a dealer to reprogram the ignition on a bike with work that they didn't do.

Ok,
I am going to make the plunge. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the company I should buy from when it comes to "big bore" kits?
thanks again!

Nallin racing has a package where they will take your stock cylinders and bore them, port the cylinder heads and intake, with pistons, rings, gaskets, and a programmable ignition module for a very nice price.
Otherwise, I like the Axtell iron cylinders. Only comes in all black though, if that matters to you.

Also, you might want to call http://www.gmrperformance.com/ and talk to Steve. See what he has to say.

Just Did The Compression Test
FRONT WAS 167 AND REAR WAS 169.
I dont think I have a head gasket leak. Double checked my bill and it says "leaking head gaskets, need replacing" on it!
I dont know what kind of oil the mechanic sprayed on the cylinders to make the motor sputter, snake oil maybe!
I have ordered a stage 2 kit, new cam, injectors and map. I guess a new cam bearing is in order
thanks for your help!

It may be a bit late posting on this topic but if the aircleaner was anywhere near the area that He was spraying the brake parts cleaner the intake would pick up the fumes, overspray, and cause the engine to change in RPMs.
