Games

When we were all kids - it sounds like none of us spent a lot of time watching TV. What games did you play?
Summer - Non Stop bike riding, horse back riding, sand box (making towns and villages) then having a war to see who's survived. Melting army men with magnifying glass (also other things - bugs), hide and seek (outside), climbing trees, swimming.

Winter - Card house fights - sounds odd - but we would build card houses and put army men inside - then "bomb" them with marbles. Stongest houses won. Board games - all of them. Played in the snow - igloo's, forts, snowmen. Hide and seek in the snow - having to follow tracks.

That is just some - what did you play when you were kids?

I grew up out in the country, so me and my brother devised all kinds of things to keep us occupied.

One that I remember was making cars out of Legos. We would then crash them into each other to see who could build the strongest car.

TV was that thing where we had to move the outdoor antenna when we wanted to change channels.

If it was outside, I did it year round. I remember lying to the folks "no I'm not too cold" even though my fingers and toes were about to crack off.

Alot of basketball, football, bike riding and swimming. When I was inside I was pretending I was outside with toy cars and such or playing board games.

Let's see, I had my yamaha 80. (Got that when I was five) When I wasn't on that it was bicycles, forts, football.

We used to make blow guns from a two foot piece of pvc, and then the darts were note book paper taped into a two inch cone. Once the cone was made, we would insert staight pins from behind the cone. Hurt like a b... , but was very accurate.

Luckily a lot of my time was in the country, so there were cross country survival hikes. (Which meant me and a buddy would pack some sodas, and beef jerky, candy bars, and wander throught the neighbors twenty acres with a deep creek in it for eight hours)

We would buy enough black cats fire crackers to last years, so we always had enough black powder to make bombs. We'd empty those fire crackers and roll them into a damn stick of dynamite and looking back now, I'm suprised I still have limbs.

There was the pellet rifles, bb guns and then the faithful .22 lever action I got when I was eight. I still have that gun too. Don't forget the pocket knives, we thought we could turn into throwing knives.

Skateboards, (not those sissy wide ones they have now) My buddy had a go kart. If his dad could keep it runnin' then it was great. Another buddy had a four wheeler later on we used to hurt our selves with. (You know, make the ramp taller, no taller, NO TALLER; I can do it- watch this!)

Wow, in a few minutes what a trip down memory lane.

Oh, don't forget the lead paint chips we chewed on!!

I remember making forts in the woods and BB guns. Rode the bike everywhere. Building go-carts out of scrap lumber, rebar, and baby buggy wheels. Roman candle fights! Hell... I still do those!

THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!
If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears
With their tedious diatribes about how hard things
were. When they were growing up; what with walking Twenty-five
miles to school every morning... Uphill... barefoot…
BOTH ways

Yadda, yadda, yadda

And
I remember promising myself that when I grew up,There was
no way in hell I was going to lay A bunch of crap like that
on kids about how hard I had it And how easy they've got it!
But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of
Thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth
of today..

You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my
Childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!
And I hate to say it but you kids today you
Don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The
Internet. If we wanted to know something, We had to go to the
damn library and
Look it up ourselves, in the card
catalogue!!
There was no email!! We had to actually write
Somebody a letter, with a pen!
...Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to
Steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself!
Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off
the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and
@#*% it all up!

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you
Were on the phone and somebody else called
they got a busy signal, that's it!

And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either!
When the phone rang, you had no
idea who it was! It could be your school,
Your mom, your boss, your Bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you
Just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video
Games with high-resolution 3-D graphics!
We had the Atari 2600! With games Like 'Space Invaders' and
'asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You Actually
had to use your Imagination!! And there were no multiple
levels orScreens, it was just one screen
Forever!

And you could never win. The game just kept getting
Harder and harder and Faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

You had to use a Little book called a TV Guide to find out what was

On! You were screwed when it Came to channel surfing! You had to get off Your ass and walk over to the TV to change the Channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons
On Saturday Morning. Do you Hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK For cartoons, you spoiled Little rat-bastards!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat
Something up we had to use the stove .... Imagine that!
That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids
Today have got it too easy.

You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted Five minutes back in 1980!

Regards,
The over 30
Crowd

You 30-40 year olds with your Atari 2600! When I was growing up there wasn't no changing cartridges to play a different game. All we had was Pong! If you wanted to play a video game it was Pong or nothing. No fancy schmancy "joystick" controller, all we had was a knob to turn.... and we liked it!

Regards,
The over 40 crowd.
