Under Armour Heat Gear

Anybody else messed with this product?

I'm pretty skeptical of some types of product claims, and this was one.

It's a peculiar knit material that seems to make you cooler wearing it,
than you are without it, under some circumstances.

I'm just about prepared to call it magical. It's like a heat sink for your skin.

It's worn skin tight, "compression fit" they call it, so that any trace of perspiration gets absorbed immediately into the fabric, but the fabric is as impossible to get wet as a plastic bag, so the net effect is it seems to force perspiration off the skin and into a position to be much more rapidly evaporated than would a cotton T-shirt, which just gets wet.

Like I said, I was very skeptical, but curious enough to buy more. Hopeful, I guess.

I have a couple of Heat Gear T-shirts. If I put on a typical cotton Harley shirt, and wear it around the house, it is comfortable, and not cool. If I put on one of the Heat Gear T-shirts and then put the cotton Harley shirt back on over it, I can feel a noticeable chill. What's up with that?

I have worn a long sleeve Heat Gear shirt while mowing the grass for hours in 95+ degree bright sun, it isn't oppressively hot, it doesn't get really wet like a cotton shirt does, the slightest breeze will give a me chill, and the fabric is dense enough to keep out the sun.

I ride dressed heavy even in hot weather, but for guys who dress light, I think they might make a very nice riding shirt with a vest, for hot weather, to prevent sun and windburn, and keep the rider cool.

I like it with a mesh jacket, and with a leather jacket, it should prevent wetness from any one spot from getting the jacket damp, since the moisture will spread out. It keeps the leather jacket's liner from sticking to your forearms, like it does on a hot day riding in a leather jacket over a T-shirt.

The dark orange would be a great color to wear under a black vest, which can also conceal the physique that needs some concealing. Not cheap at $35 but I think maybe worth it.

I suspect the tight fitting under-shorts might help prevent monkey-butt, presuming perspiration softened or irritated skin is a factor.
They are a very nice change on a very hot wet day from damp cotton jockey shorts. About $24

The T-shirt would be just the thing under a Levi jacket to be as cool as possible under a light riding jacket. About $24

Lots of places sell Under Armour, SportsmansGuide and others.

They make ColdGear, too, much heavier material, also polypropylene, doesn't get wet, the state of the art mil spec long johns are all polypropylene.

BTW, someone with lots of fur may not like this tight fit.
My son has much more body hair that I have, he says the compression fit
annoys the hair by forcing it to lie flat when it may not care to lie flat.

I have been meaning to try the hot weather gear. I own a set of the cold weather gear and it works good and seems like it will last a very long time.

In this very hot and humid Texas weather, I've been trying to work on my bikes in my non air conditioned shop, a T-shirt is sopping wet and heavy and miserable in minutes, it never gets any dryer, and the perspiration doesn't seem to be helping any to cool me, even with a fan blowing. The heat gear T does not get wet, there will be some dampness, but nothing to compare with a cotton T, and a breeze or a fan does cool me, in fact even when it is very hot if there is any air movement at all there is a feeling of coolness, something of a chill. The shirt almost feels as if it is cold. It's obviously not real distinct, but enough to be a mystery.

Like so many things that are subjective perceptions, and considering how counter-intuitive this products claims are, I was originally suspicious that this subtle perception of coolness was possibly skewed by the placebo effect, but the more I wear the Heat Gear T the more convinced I am that it works, if it is in the wash and I go out in a normal cotton T within 20 min I am back inside digging the heat Gear shirt out of the wash because the cotton T is so wet and heavy and miserable. Same with knit cotton briefs, from dry snug fit to miserably wet heavy loose and droopy in a half hour, if I'm going out to work in the heat, I need to find the heat gear.

Nathan, I am good friends with the Athletic Trainer and Team Chiropractor for a local college athletic department. The athletes swear by the stuff all year round.

Another mystery, on a weekend where I have had several days of hard outdoor work planned, and I don't plan on having to greet any visitors, and since I don't have very many heat gear shirts, I've worn the same shirt for more than one day, and they don't seem to support body odor at all. However that is possible.

Nathang,
I noticed the same thing. They don't get smelly like the cotton stuff.
I have several different shirts and shorts made out of the stuff.
One other thing is that when you are traveling, It packs up small and you can wash them in the sink in your hotel (or wherever) and you have a fresh shirt (or whatever) for the next day.

Good point. They are very compact, even the cold gear and some clothes with polyester can really stink up the place. This is one of those "you get what you pay for" examples. Again I have been told by others that they are very durable and last for many years.
