Still Having Windshield Airflow Problems

Hello all.

Well, I tried the quick-release, standard height windshield for my HD2008 FXSTC Softail Custom and that didn't work. Then I tried the low-profile version of the same windshield. Still have the severe helmet buffeting. At speed, I took my arm and moved it around trying to figure out where the rough air is coming from, and it's definitely from the top of the windshield. I don't feel any rough air from below at all, just from the top of the windshield. The low-profile one helped a little, but it is still unacceptable. I'm convinced the problem is that the windshield is too flat and doesn't lean back enough. Without a windshield, I have no helmet buffeting and the airflow is smooth, it's just that at highway speeds I have to lean forward into the wind. Fine for short trips, but a little tiresome on longer ones.

Unfortunately, Memphis Shades doesn't have a windshield for the FXSTC. I spoke with them on the phone yesterday. So for now, I'm shieldless unless someone out there can come up with a suggestion...

Help!!!

windshield angle

I ordered some universal muffler hangers from jc whittney. They come in different lengths with different number of wholes. I used them to adjust angles on my vrod windshield.

Windshield Risers for 2002 and later
Harley-Davidson Super Sport Windshield for VRSC™ Models

If you own the Super Sport Windshield for your 2002 or later V-Rod and are frustrated by your “bug-toothed smile,” you will appreciate the increased angle our new riser offers. The new Pingel® Riser will give you the ability to redirect the airflow over the riders head instead of directly into their face. These risers are simple to change and the installation can be done in just a few minutes with nothing more than a hex-head wrench. These quality risers are polished stainless steel and made in the United States. Fits VRSCA and VRSCB all years.

On my third windshield now. It's just the sport one from HD that fits the FXSTC (Softail Custom). So far, this one's the best as far as helmet buffeting goes. I like the size as I can see more and I don't have to look through or around it. But the buffeting is still there, so I tried the Laminar Lip. Couldn't even tell it was there even after moving it to various heights, so I sent it back. Starting to think it's got something to do with the spoiler on the back of my full-face vented helmet.

I was just gonna ask, what kinda helmet you have. I used to have problems with a KBC, got a Shoei RF-1000. Night and day difference. Has to do with the total shape of the helmet. ( I used to ride sport bike, don't tell anyone.)

I use the same one you have, the Shoei RF-1000. I discoverd if I put my hand on the back of my helmet while riding, the buffeting went away, so just a couple of days ago I removed the spoiler from the back of the helmet. It's held on with sticky tape. HUGE difference! No more buffeting, just normal wind noise. Wow!

I bought the standard windshield set up for my FXDC (Quick release) and it works great. I don`t experiance any wind buffeting at all. I don`t use a full face helmet I guess you would call it a standard helmet (covers ears) I have to agree I think it is your helmet causeing you the greef. I no I once had a full face Yamaha helmet that seemed to bring all the on coming air right up into my eyes, so my eyes used to water like hell, I got rid of that sorry excuse of a helmet real quick. Yep I would borrow a helemt and try that first.
