Help with Planning ride to Southern Utah

Hi Gang,

In mid-April, I will be leading a group of 5-8 motorcycles on a ride from Lubbock, TX, through the canyons of Southern Utah and then to Las Vegas. I'm looking for suggestions, ideas for places to stay.

We aren't into cheap, but at the same time, expensive is not our style either. I would think that we are looking for clean and locally owned motels. A hot tub would be nice, but not necessary.

Does anyone have any thoughts about places to say in Blanding, Utah, and Panguitch, Utah? We'll probably need four rooms each night, maybe five.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Randy in Lubbock

Hello, and welcome to our lil' corner of the Inner'nets! Tell us a lil' about yourself?

My friend and I are planning a similar route through UT and NV later in the year (we'll be camping in the national parks along the way, cuz we ARE into "cheap") - love to hear what people come up with.

Randy... Have ridden southern UT a number of times, including last year with six others. It is a world class ride. Nothing like it. Blanding and Panguitch are nice bookends to a memorable but long day's ride. Both towns have the Best Westerns, etc. kinds of places to stay. I would simply Google "Blanding Lodging" for a list of places to stay, with links to check out.

An alternative, if you want to go more slowly, see Natural Bridges, Bryce, pause at Glen Canyon, Capitol Reef, and Escalante Staircase, is stay halfway, like in Torrey or Boulder. There are places with cabins, rooms, etc. that are very motorcycle friendly for all the riders that ride this great place. Just search Google "Torrey lodging".

Along the way in Escalante...

Pausing before Factory Butte near Hanksville...

BTW, re-reading your post, things could be sketchy weather wise in April in this area. The pics above were late May. Note the ride video here when I recorded Utah 12 from Boulder to Torrey on Memorial Day weekend. Lot's of snow on the sides of the road near Boulder. You will probaby be fine from Blanding to Torrey, but west of Torrey, on 12 or 24, could be a roll of the dice. This is high altitude country.

KBO... You will have a fanstastic ride. National Parks and Monuments are stacked like dominos next to each other in southern Utah, beyond what is noted in my previous post... like Moab, Cedar Breaks, and Zion as well. Incredibly scenic. A quick suggestion is planning for this late May or June, or September. In July and August it is a furnace. 100+ temps even at 9:00-10:00p at night. Plus tourists. If you're passing through CO can give you suggestions.

Steve, somehow I just KNEW I could count on you!!! Looking at your photos makes me wonder why in the hell I am living in the Midwest!

Yep... this will be the Dirty Old Ladies Club's 2009 "Oven Roasted Tour"... plan is to collect my friend Sue in Denver sometime after the 15th of August and head out/down. Utah, Vegas and over to Death Valley... then down and back through AZ, NM and Texas. Hoping to have enough time to get back to the Barbed Wire Museum before beatin' feets back to Iowa... although something tells me that I should get with you for a sanity check - the more I see, the more I wonder if 14 days will be enough???

Sounds like a great theme... Dirty Old Ladies Oven Roasted Tour! The roasting will certainly happen in Vegas and Death Valley in August. But it's a dry heat! Ehhh... you'll be fine. To be sure, you'll find it very nice up high in Colorado late August. 14 days for all you have planned will be pushing it. Can be done but you might not be giving yourself enough time to pause here and there. If there's one thing I would do differently from all the trips taken over the years it would be to pull over and see/experience more places versus passing them by as I charged to get to another distant location by nightfall.

Anyway, planning is a good chunk of the fun! Here's a link to help with the dreaming and planning... an outstanding report (with outstanding photography) from a female rider in TX, exploring the Rockies and west on her own last summer, camping most places, seeing much of the area you hope to. On a cold winter's night with a warm brew and time to go along on a long ride... http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=354446
