The wife and I spent 2 days on the Outer Banks the 1st week of April. We decided to stay at the Sea Foam Motel in Whalebone just as you get off 64 on South Virgina Dare Trail. The Motel was right on the beach the back door of our room literally opened up to the beach. The Sea Foam is by no means a high quality place to stay, but it was right on the beach, price was right, and they were very biker friendly.
After a wife mandated morning beach walk to look for shells we loaded up and headed out. We headed north to the Currituck Beach Light house. Beautiful drive up thru Kitty Hawk and a little town called Duck. The Light House was awsome, but we were too early in the season to climb any of them. But not having to deal with traffic and tourist was worth not being able to climb the towers.
After about 45 mins. we headed back south to Bodie Island Lighthouse that was just south of our Motel.
At this point the weather decided that we should not be on a bike as the temp dropped from low 60's to low 40's and started raining. So we went back to the Motel and swapped the bike for the tow rig and continue on with the tour. Cape Hatteras is a good haul south and worth the trip. This is the tallest brick light house in the US and the most famous. It was moved in 1999 to protect it from the ocean claiming it.
To continue on requires a ferry boat ride to Ocracoke Island which is free and only a 40-45 min ride. Ocracoke is a small community that is well worth the trip. This is where the Outer Banks locals go to hang out. The light house was actually hard to find as its not really that tall.
I was stationed a Camp Lejeune years ago and have been to the Outer Banks during the summer months. Even though we did not have the best weather the fact that we basically had the place to ourselves was well worth dealing with it. If we were to do it again I would have stayed up near Duck the first night and spent the day going south and spent the 2nd night in Ocracoke or vice versa.
PS. Before anyone gives me any lip about towing a bagger from TN to NC and not riding it, We were hauling stuff to my son who is stationed at Cherry Point MCAS and we capitalized by bringing the bike also. I hate the fact that I had to put the thing in a trailer, but better than not having it when we got to OBX.
