West Bound '09
Just wanted to give a report on a ride my wife and one of our friends took this past month, we all had two weeks off from work so we took off and headed west from Tennessee. We headed out through Arkansas where we spent the first night; we stopped and spent some time in Oklahoma City which was very nice including the dealership there right off I40 and our second night was spent in Amarillo, TX. On that point I would say that the Harley Davidson dealership should be avoided as they are rude and do not put traveling riders ahead on the schedule.
We spent the third night in Roswell, NM, had a very nice time with a friendly visit to the Champion Harley dealership in Roswell as well as the High Plains Harley dealership in Clovus, NM. We even waited out the rain under a friendly home owner on the way to Roswell. We spent the fourth night in Raton, NM where we visited the Capiulan Volcano. The sixth night we spent in a town right outside of Monument Valley in Arizona where we visited Monument Valley. The seventh and eighth nights we spent in St. George, Utah as we were visiting the Grand Canyon. We also saw Zion and Bryce Canyons while we were in that part of the country, all were worth visiting might I add. We had to have an oil change and a front tire put on in Zion, Utah where we found a great bunch of folks. Those people called us on three different occasions to check that our experience at their dealership was what we thought it should be.
The tenth night we spent in Greeley, CO with a very nice visit to the dealership in that town. We had to repair my friends fairing after an impromptu meeting with a deer in Utah, which is where we spent the ninth night as he just didn’t want to go on after the deer incident.
The folks that live in northern NM and southern Utah know how beautiful their area is but if you do not I would highly recommend a visit to that part of the country.
The eleventh night we spent in Rapid City, SD where we saw Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse, stopped in Hill City and Deadwood where we visited both dealerships and left with a pleasant feeling. We also had to spend a few hours in the hospital while in Rapid City as my friend had a kidney stone while we were in Rapid City. We sent him to the hospital at 6 AM, he passed the stone at 10 AM and by noon we were on our way to Mount Rushmore. The twelfth night and final night we spent in Kansas City, MO.
All in all we rode 6,047 miles in 13 days and had a wonderful trip, we would all do it again even with the deer and kidney stone incidents. I would highly recommend a trip westward if you have never done so as there is just some absolutely wonderful scenery to take in. Between our friend and my wife we had over 2500 photos taken.
