what a trip
yesterday afternoon I went for about a 30 mile cruise. Went to meet a client, then stopped by a bro's house for a spell then headed home. on the way back home, I took the scenic route, an old 2 lane country road. was cruising along about 80 or so and out of nowhere, a very large female deer jumps out of a roadside ditch and into the road right in front of me. (now let me clarify, I say right in front of me, I would estimate it to be less than 100 feet) the deer obviously startled, slipped while trying to turn around and went down, flat on her belly, legs sprawled in every which direction. By this time I have both brakes locked up. as I am sliding towards the deer, she finally made it back to her feet and ran off the opposite side of the road (probably no more than 30 feet in front of me). 2 or 3 more seconds could have been disasterous.
so all of this leads to a question, how many of you all carry extra underwear and a roll of TP on your bikes just for instances such as this? I am truely supprised I didn't need to wipe and change.
another question comes to mind. WHile I had both brakes locked, and was slowing rather quickly, why did my back brake completely lock and put my rear tire into a skid? is this normal, or did I just have my foot too heavy on the pedal?

Never carry any extra underooos, just use the nearest woods or cut off the old? Remember in every emergency situation just try to remain calm. Then when safe poop?

Weight transfer to the front suspension, (and front suspension collapse) under a panic stop causes the rear tire to become light, (rear suspension unload) and lock up the rear brake. In extreme braking conditions, the rear tire can actually leave the roadway, as the bike loads up on the front forks, and fork travel stops. Watch AMA/Moto-GP racing sometime, when they enter corners.
Hence why racers drill the rear rotor to not only lighten it, (less rotating mass) but to also decrease braking surface and avoid lock-ups, but retain braking power. Allowing a little air in the rear brake line is another method.
Here's the rear rotor on my old race bike:
The front brake on a motorcycle is responsibile for 70% braking capacity under normal circumstances, and becomes even LESS, under hard braking and almost worthless in a panic stop, other then leaving a nice, tjon, lightly colored black mark on the road, and scrubbing off little to no speed before impact with Bambi/car/truck/old lady in crosswalk.
Glad nothing worse happened Rockerbox. I wouldn't feel bad. The deer is probably in the woods, cleaning poo out of her fur too......

Yipes!!! Glad you are ok... Are you sure the front was locked as well? When the front locks up...the rear is the least of your worries
