Starter Problems
This has been a recurring problem for a few months now on my 95' Herritage Softail Classic. I push the starter button and sometimes it will not engage, I will hear CLICK,CLICK,CLICK and then generally after a few pushes of the ignition switch it will start. Once it starts, it doesn't happen again that day. If it sits for a day or two, then same problem, it takes me a few tries at least to get it to fire. Now it won't start at all. Just CLICK,CLICK,CLICK, I'm charging the battery right now, but it's reading a good charge. How about the solenoid? Now I'm beginning to wonder if this has anything to do with the whining noise coming from the engine. The whine ramps up and down with the throttle and it's very loud and irratating. I can't seem to pinpoint where it's comimg from exactly (right front, left front, middle) I'm stumped, but then agagin I'm sort of mechanically challenged anyways. Well, now that I'm here I might as well tell you about a rattle I hear especially in 3rd and 4th gear, almost sounds like somethings loose. These problems do not seem to effect the performance of the bike though, at least not yet. Any help from the foks on this forum would be greatly appreciated. The bike's going in to my service guy shortly.
Thanks in advance

A solenoid is exactly what it sounds like, if the battery connections are tight and clean. This also goes for the cable connection at the starter.
That annoying whining you have is a failing INA inner cam bearing, that all Evos have from 1991-1999. It needs to be replaced, before the bearing fails completely, and takes out an an oil pump or worse.
It needs to be replaced with a Torrington bearing part # B-138, and don;t be surprized that the cam journal it rides on is already shot, requiring a cam replacement.
Seeing that you're tearing it down that far to replace the bearing, (literally) you might as well throw a Andrews EV27 cam in it, new tappest and adjustable pushrods.
Here's 2 links .... I did mine twice in the last 90 days, cause I wasn't happy with the SE1 cam, and changed cams again.
What's long and hard...

Here are the two bearings, exactly.
This is the INA bearing. It has a plastic cage that eliminates every other bearing roller, that the B-138 has.
This is the Torringron B-138 bearing. It has nothing but rollers. Apparently, they (HD) thought that all these rollers were going to be a problem, although, they weren't in the shovels and early (84-90) Evos, and it would be best to fix something that wasn't broken....

Thanks so much for your advice and input Dave, I've talked to you before and you really seem to know your stuff. This sounds like it could be a costly problem to fix though. At any rate it's gonna get done. Even though I'm in southeastern Ontario,Canada, we've still got a lot of ridin' days left yet.
Thanks again

It's a shame you don't live closer. Parts are $275, and I'm getting pretty good at it.....
