Tranny trouble

sorry folks, but we don't seem to have a tranny/primary section of the forum so I will post my question here.

several months ago I was riding along and went to downshift to 4th to pass a couple vehicles, and when I let of the clutch and twisted my wrist, the bike didn't go, I had hit "neutral"

ok, I figured it was a fluke and I had somehow got stuck between gears. now last evening I was taking off from a stop sign, prolly a little too quickly, and was jamming thru the gears, and when I went into 4th, same thing...nothing, so I clutched again, shifted and it went directly into 5th. and that was the 3rd or 4th time in the past months and a half or so this has happened.

Is this my shifting? it generally only happens when I am jamming thru the gears very rapidly (speed shifting)...or is my tranny starting to have problems?

the bike is a 98 flst 1340 evo, 5 speed stock. about 36,000 miles
if the tranny is going out, what is the chances it is covered under the Harley ESP warantee I have on the bike untill May of 2010?

if it is bad, and not covered under warantee, I am thinking possibly replacing (when I can afford it....startin to save pennys) with a Rev-tech 6 speed. that is pretty much a direct bolt on replacement isn't it? and while the bike would be tore down to change the tranny, i am thinking might as well go down to a 29 tooth front drive pully and a narrower belt.

suggestions???? advice????

thanks

Jack your bike up , get the rear tire off the ground , now shift it to 3rd gear and move the shifter back and forth without shifting to another gear . You're looking for the shift return spring feel ... there should be equal amounts of travel forward and backward in the spring feel . If not equal then the shift quadrant needs to be adjusted meaning the shift drum isn't locating the gears correctly .

STAY AWAY FROM THE REVTECH 6 SPEED!!!! big time junk.baker has the best 6 speed on the market, all the others copied their design, exept revtech, they came up with there own design, with thinner gears to make the trans sime width as a stock trans, have had many recalls & probs (we quit doing the warranty work becauase CCI wouldnt pay to take trans out of bike)accesories unlimited has a nice 6 speed

I've installed 3 Revtechs with zero issues, but I gotta agree with Kirby.....none of them were in my OWN bike. I'd go with Baker myself.

There's a reason why Baker's 3 times more expensive then Revtech. It's like going to the local house of ill repute: That 75 year old prostitute is $65 a night, and that new, 22 year old gal, with the firm perky boobies, and lucious, tight kiester is $750 a night.

Performance.....better quality.....and the Baker six-speed doesn't make the room smell all funny after you put it in.

You can go with a narrower belt for a fatter tire, but the cost of the belt, ($140) a new narrower rear pulley ($110) and a new, wider rear tire ($130) to me, at least, isn;t worth the cost for nothing more than 1/2-3/4" more rubber and a more costly rear tire. Not to mention, it may still scrape the rear fender mounting bolts.

will try that schmidty
ProDrag...point taken. I know Bakers are best, but was looking at price. I know 3 people that have the Rev6 and none have had any trouble with them that I know of, but if there can be probs with them, I would be the one that would have problems
good point Dave....but if I have to change the tranny, I still wanna go with a smaller drive pulley and a biggerone out back. that's why I want a 6 speed. tired of most the guys I ride with takin off and leaving me in the dust...... now once warantee is expired, I am def thinking cam work and possibly head work.

Look at my avatar, I badly need headwork

You need a few special tools, but it may just need an adjustment, Rocker..... There's 2: Shift linkage, and the Gear Engagement Adjuster. (which of course, is next to the sprocket, behind the inner primary....

Your manual tells you how to adjust the gear engagement adjuster and if you don't have a manual, or lost it or used it to beat the dog for peeing on the rug, I'll gladly type the instructions out for you, or Xerox the pages and mail them to you.

I'd watch your foot and make sure it is clearing the shifter and letting it rock back into the next shift setup first. Some time if you got big feet or new boots this dont happen.
