Crash Bars, keep em or dump em?
I have been thinking or removing the crash bar that was on my bike when I bought it. I just don't like the way it looks and think the bike would look cleaner with them gone. Any opinions about if they are worth keeping in place, or are they just something to bolt front foot pegs to?

I like the engine (crash) bars on my electraglide makes for good place for feet and does keep you somewhat safe if you happen to hit critters or fall over at low speeds. That is just what I think.

CRASH BAR! I refer to them as engine guard, crash bar implies expectations of crashing. We'll have none of that business in my mind. As far as removing them, I prefer to have them as they offer several options of use on the road. Some examples of these are; Hwy. pegs, extra lighting and other accessories, plus the biggest reason they offer some protection. Now if owned an additional bike refered to as bar hopper, cafe bike, chopper and so on, then I would option not to have one as I would generally ride short journeys with these type bikes.
A quick short story about engime guards, While riding with a group a friends, a three foot piece of lumber 2x4 shot out from another vehicle that ran over it on the interstate and the end of it struck the engine guard of his bike. The force of it nearly dumped him, as a result of the impact the engine guard was deeply dented and bent back. The trajectory of it was for his right leg area, but luckly the engine guard deflected it away. We were all happy for that engine guard's protection that day!

I had my SG tied down on a ferry once going to Manitoulin island, after a long day & many alcoholic beverages it came time to get the bike off the ferry & the drunken azzhole owner of the SG undid the left side tie down completely instead of loosening both tie downs equally & then proceded to watch his beautiful Iron horse be body slammed down on its right hand side..Thank God for the engine crash bar, it took the majority of the hit, some minor paint scrapes on the panier & front fender. Without that bar, the fairing, handlebars, panier & fender would have been toast... I'll never take my crash bar off!
