Odometer LCD Problem, 98' FLSTS

I'm having problems with my 98' FLSTS Odometer going "black" and having the LCD become unreadable. HD Customer Service says they have never heard of the problem and say there was never a Service Bulletin on this issue. It started when the bike was 2 years old, I'm the original owner and the bike has less than 2K miles on it. NHTSA has regulations regarding odometers that manufactures have to meet in order to satisfy "True Mileage." I would imagine someone has registered a complaint with them. I doubt I'm the only owner who has had this problem.

Does anyone remember a Service Bulletin regarding this issue? Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like an electronic problem....FYI..I have a Softail speedo out of my 05 in perfect condition I'll let go real reasonable...if you're interested...need to check compatabilty from 98 to 05.....It has around 8K miles on it...I took it out for a speedo/tach combo gauge I put in, been stored in a box on a shelf....if interested and it would fit, send me a PM..Lee

PS can post a couple pics if interested....

Thanks for the offer. According to HD, your 05 part requires an adapter harness because you have a pin connector and mine is wire/lug connections. The "new" replacement P/N is 67027-96C and is $311.00 from HD. As a word of caution, there is a Vendor selling this replacement Speedo on eBay and doesn't mention the fact that it needs an adapter harness (another $61.00) to make it work.

Thanks,
Jim Mc.

Hey twinx1649,I have the same problem with my 98 fatboy..It reminds me of a LCD watch I had years ago that got moisture in it..I'm not quite sure what to do about it yet...But I'll figure out something some day....

I'm going to take another run at HD Customer Service and show them documented cases where the LCD odometers went bad without customer abuse as the cause.

Thanks for your input, I will let you know what I find out.

Seen this before , most qualify for warranty if within the warranty period . If you're the second owner and didn't have a warranty transfer then you'll probably be stuck with the cost for repair or new speedo .
