Oil Cooler
Hello to all from the great plains state of SD!. I have been lurking around here for a while and know everyone here know your stuff. So, after forking most of my deployment money my new baby. I am all about being proactive on keeping it in tip top shape. Is a engine oil cooler worth the $$$ in your opinion?? I am coming up on the 1000 mile service stop and thinking of getting one installed. Oh I did search here and in the engine section. Thanks

It can't hurt, it's like insurance. Is it worth it?
I have the H-D cooler it does make a temperature difference.

I have one. I think they are worth it on the TwinCams as they run hotter oil temps than the EVOs.

I have one on my 2009 Dyna Super Glide. Considering how little it costs if you buy it from a Harley discounter like Zanotti, it's a bargain upgrade.
https://www.zanottimotor.com/shopping/partLookUp.html
The Harley cooler is made by Jagg and it comes with a thermostat in the adapter. That way your engine will warm up quickly and it won't run too cool on winter days. Installation takes about an hour or so. Don't forget to use a good quality synthetic oil like: Mobile-1, Amsoil, or Spectra. Synthetics can take a lot more heat than mineral oils. They also run cooler because of reduced friction.

The two best insurance issues that you can do is put an oil cooler on and switch to a GOOD synthetic oil...The 3 best oils I know of are Mobil 1 V-Twin oil, Amsoil & Lucas....I use Mobil 1 combined with a couple other items that reduce oil temp and I am running a twin cam that runs at EVO temperatures.....

I agree that a cooler is well worth the investment. By itself it will be limited, but in combination with good syn oils, stage I, etc., the benefits will be the greatest.

Remember, the oil cooler only really works while you're moving, with air flow into it. While stuck in traffic, it will do no good at all, unless you get one that has a fan on it. My 1980 Low Rider came with one from the factory. Don't know why they stopped that, other to get extra money out of ya.

That is incorrect. You forgot about "radiation" heat transfer. May not be as effective as air flowing through while moving but it still has heat transfer.

Doesn't the extra oil volume also help a little in cooling, even if bike is not moving?
