I haven't found one yet that I can get more than 3 qts. in . Wanna know why ? I'll tell ya why . Those are dry unweighted specs ! ! !
If you have a Softail that's at a service interval it's gonna take 3 qts. in the oil tank . If ya put 3.5 qts. in it's gonna read over full on the dipstick after ya run the engine !
Oil cling !!! Ya can't drain all the oil outta the engine , there's always gonna be about a half quart left in the engine after ya drain the oil .
If ya rebuild the engine and put it all back together with assy. lube then you would put 3 qts. in the oil bag and pre-fill the filter ... that equals 3.5 qts. .
A dry Softail engine takes 3.5 qts. !

On my '05 Fat Boy, I went through this. Followed the book and filled it with 3.5 qts...Oil was up to the bottom of the fill neck, overfilled. I pulled some out. Next time put in 3.25 qts. Still alittle too much. Schmidty is right, 3.5 is too much. And I change the filter every time I change my oil.

unless you pull the oil out of the sump, you will only get 2.5 to 3 qts in. Below is a link that explains how to get all oil (pretty much) out. I have used and it works quite well. be sure to have an emtpy container to place hose in when you start engine.

Don't use if you don't think you are capable. Also, use a stand of some type to have bike level.

good info. yes it says capacity is 3.5 quarts, and yes, if you are changing your oil 3.5 is too much. I did that once, (my wife use to have a turkey baster )
3 quarts, bike sitting level (not on the kick stand) to check
and good luck getting the filter of while maintaining all of the skin on your knuckles
