oil pressure guage install-pics
hey all,
this thread describes the steps for basic install of an oil pressure guage on my '05 sporty. rather than send PM's out, i decided to put it on the forum for all to see.
it's gonna take a bit to build so stand by, and i'll give it a go....
pressure guage install is best served by installing a "tee" into the feed for the oil pressure sending unit. this is located directly under the oil filter on the '05 sporty.
in order to access the area with the most amount of space, it is advised that the wiring harness located directly below the oil filter area, be un-plugged, and moved out of the way.
these wires include the oil sending unit wire, the delphi module plug, and the round prong plug sitting next to it...
once these wires are un-plugged and unclipped from the plug holder on the frame, they can be moved out of the way..
move the wires left and right of the frame rails to expose the oil filter area completely....
you can remove the oil filter...the first picture shows the area with the harness, plugs, and filter removed...to include the oil pressure sending unit...
use care when removing the pressure sending unit. the proper tool is suggested, and can be found at local auto parts stores without much trouble....rotate the unit counter-clockwise to remove it..
next you'll need to purchase the sending unit extension, and the tee..
tee's can be found at most plumbing stores, along with the extension, which end up being a 1/8 pipe nipple at 1.5 inches long. a 2 inch nipple can be used as well...the next picture shows the items i used...
i chose teflon tape as the seal material because it wont push into the threads, and break off in chuncks like pipe sealant will...but remember that teflon is "slippery" and can lead to threaded fittings being to tight....DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE FITTINGS !!!
you may crack the engine housing !!
once you have the fittings built, you can install the tee and extension into the engine...its a little tough to get big hands into this spot, but take your time and dont cross thread the engine housing..
the next picture shows the fittings mounted and oriented to the proper position for the re-install of the pressure switch...
once you reach this step, yur ready for the guage and hose..some will use rigid tubing, but i chose hose because its cheap, easy to fit, and has virtually no transfer of vibration...
the hose is 18 inches long, fitted with 2, 1/8 pipe fittings..in addition, purchase (1) 1/8 pipe coupler for use on the guage end of the tube..this allows for mods down the road with different guages..
seal the fitting on one end with teflon, thread and tighten the hose into the filter side of the tee...fitting the sending unit on the exhaust side of the tee...
some slight rotation of the tee to set the final position may be needed... the next picture shows both items installed....and an additional pic for the sending unit...
just a note on the hose i used...it is a 300psi rated oil hose, with 300 psi clampless fittings, they push on, and do not leak...
at this point you can re-install the wire harness connections, and "refill" your oil filter if needed, and re-install....
i will continue n the next post......g

my pic with the filter installed did not turn out...sorry....
lets move to the guage install...
my mount point is on my choke bracket and the following pics show the guage with a temporary mounting sytem known as the "zip tie"
this is not a permanent mount as i'm making a new one in the machine shop, and should have it done next week....
all things considered its a very quick and effective mod...sorry for the zip tie thing and the long posts...
i hope you can use this mod in the future with your own spin on it...i'll post up with the completed bracket as soon as its complete....thats it for now, g
edit: just a note on the guage..its a 0-60 psi liquid filled to keep the vibes down, and does not bounce at all...use a good quality guage, this is afterall your harley engine...
teflon tape the end of the hose and attach your guage, orienting it to your liking..bracket methods are many...and i was not happy with the systems available, so i'm building my own in the shop...good luck all...post up with questions...g

Thanks gents,
still need to get the bracket taken care of, and i'm bouncing the design around a little bit, but its pretty good....just a note, the guage is very stable in the choke bracket area.
i tried it up front on the frame rail, and it vibrated like crazy....
based on that test, there is more vibration at the frame, than on the engine in the choke position....HHHHmmmmmm............g
