A mod for you Sporty guys/gals.

If you like your OEM air filter, but want to improve it, or make it different them the other 1.5 million, then read on...

A friend of mine has a son that just got home from 2 tours in Iraq. He found and bought a a 2008 1200N, and it already was lowered, Rush pipes, K&N air filter insert, F/M system, but he's been slowly adding little touches to it. The airfilter cover on it now is gray, and the stock, shiney one came with it, as did all the stock parts.

I saw the front fender mount, and the belt gaurd and thought, "Hmmmm...what about more speed holes?" Chris agreed.

Start by placing a stripe of painter's tape along the filter housing where desired. Usinf a flexable tape measure, place marks where you want your holes. I went with every inch. Mine will be starting with 3/4" holes, leading to smaller and smaller holes.

After marking your holes, use a small bit to start a mark. Using a center punch may damage the metal, or bend it hitting the punch hard enough to make a mark. I also used a 4x4 to work on, as it held the airfilter well and the drill bit hit the wood, before the chuck would hit the finished surface of the metal.

If you don't have a 4x4, place a small piece of rubber hose on the drill bit, to prevent metal to metal contact.

To drill the holes, I use step bits. About $8 at Harbor Freight. I have about 6 sets, as I used to use them to lighten stainless rotors for racers. These are a must in any workshop.

Start drilling your holes according to desired size, and BE CAREFUL of the burs that are created on the backside. It's like itching your ass in a pair of underwear full of razorblades.

Afterwards, I used a grinder with a sanding disc, to sand off the inside burs, and a rat tail file to finish off the holes.

Remove the tape, and wipe off. You can use touch-up paint in the holes now, ehre the raw metal is. Tape off the OUTSIDE holes, and primer and repaint the raw metal on the inside. The tape prevents overspray from going through the holes and getting all over the outside.

This one isn't going to get painted, rather, will be sent out this week for flat black powder coating.

That looks cool, Chris..

Despite my wishes to PC the part, I ended up using 1 coat of acid etch primer and 4 coats of VHT high heat flat black. Afterwards, I "sanded" the flat with a papertowel, to knock off the high spots you get with any flat paint. It gives is a luster, but maintains the flat black look.

The next thing we got is a '74 3/4 helmet. Time for more flat black! And maybe Dave will throw down with the striping brush.
