74 Ironhead Sportster Starter Issues

I have a 74 ironhead 1000 right side shift which has some bendix starter issues. unfortunately all I have is electric start and i havent been able to start the bike yet because I bought it like this and we have some issues to figure out. All id like to know is if I'm going to have to remove the primary cover in order to get out the starter housing.

a few known issues:

at some point the bolt on top broke off, leaving about 1/2 inch of threads inside the bolt hole...i know im going to have to take out the housing in order to remedy this.

also, i have noticed that the large gear on the inside of the hole where the starter motor goes spins freely in either direction. i am assuming this mean I need a starter bendix.

i do know the starter is a hitachi, so if anyone out there needs a brand new chrome prestolite I have one new in the box never before used.

I don't, but, you can just measure to see what size they need to be and go to your local hardware store and grab them, they aren't really anything special

new events.

appreciate the love from everyone. just to give you some progress: I started to tear down my 74 ironhead and found that someone broke off one of the starter mounting bolts in the starter housing. I also found that the teeth on the gear which engages with the flyhweel are pretty well worn down. I am curious to know if I can disassemble the bendix and turn that gear around so that the fresh teeth can mesh with the flywheel and I dont have to replace that whole gear, yet anyways.

and if I do have to repalce that gear, any idea if I can order that part? or must I order a whole new bendix?

also, i spoke to my local mechanic and he said i can just use the prestolite that I have. others ive heard tell me that I can only use the prestolite with a prestolite housing. Ill check it in the evening.
