03 883 shocks

Showing my ignorance and newbie-ness here. Are the shocks on my '03 XL883C adjustable. If so, how the heck does one do it? They son't have numbers like some I've seen, but what looks like a graduated ring around the bottom, almost looks like you could move that and stiffen the ride?

You guessed it. The higher up the "Steps" of that lower ring you move it, the more preload or "harder to compress" the shocks it gets.

There's a tool that does this that costs about $10 from your dealer. Sometimes you can wear gloves and twist it by hand.

2-3 steps higher. Try 2 first. You don't want it too harsh.

I don't care what you do with those shocks the bike won't ride well till you replace them with a good aftermarket, (XL1200L) 440 progressives I hear the 412s are good also.

Well, I was picking up a quick release windshield from a guy today and as we were talking we got around to shocks - he had a spanner wrench so i cranked the shocks up one from the lowest level. Seemed a little less willing to bottom out quickly with no noticeable change to average riding.
